The word of the day is; Weather! There is a lot of rain in multiple forecasts so make sure to pay attention and be prepared to pivot when we get closer to roster lock. With so much weather in play you will need to be flexible but also understand how the weather is going to affect others decisions and possibly use that to your advantage. Lets get into the MLB DFS Strategy where we take a closer look at the Pitchers and Stacks to target for todays DFS action at both FanDuel and DraftKings.
Francisco Liriano, Pittsburgh Pirates (FD $9400, DK $10,000) – Liriano against a punch-less Chicago White Sox lineup without a DH? Yes, please! Liriano frequents my writings as I love his upside and he has the ability to completely shut down any team he faces. He has 35 strike outs over his last 4 starts while allowing just 5 runs in those starts. Liriano is my top option tonight but like many games, this one has some weather concerns and for that reason I may have to pivot.
Dallas Keuchel, Houston Astros (FD $9700, DK $9600) – Keuchel seems to go under the radar at times even though he has a microscopic 1.90 ERA on the season so far and has shown us nearly 50 point upside on DK so far this season. He is a true work horse and that is great to see in terms of DFS because he gets to go out there and throw 110+ pitches and is able to get us 7, 8 or even 9 innings a start and we all know that more innings means more points overall for our fantasy rosters. The idea of the Rockies getting to add a DH to their lineup tonight is a little troubling, however Keuchel is a true ace and should be able to shut these guys down in Houston tonight.
Masahiro Tanaka, New York Yankees (FD $9600, DK $10,600) – I was a little bit shocked to see Tanaka as the highest priced pitcher on DK for tonight as I just do not trust him all that much with everything going on in his elbow, however it is very tough to argue the results since returning from the DL. In his two starts since returning he has gone 14 innings, has struck out 15 batters while allowing just 8 hits and 2 runs. One thing that scares me with Tanaka is the fact that the Yankees are going to limit his pitch counts and he could come out after 5 innings just because, which can be very frustrating. Obviously the nice part about taking a Yankees starter is the fact that their bullpen can be a shut down unit which can preserve the W.
Williams Perez, Atlanta Braves (FD $5800, DK $4400) – Perez has given up just 6 earned runs over his last 5 starts and has been pitching extremely well for the Braves. He has struck out 27 batters in those 5 starts while pitching 30 innings. He can get a little wild and start walking a few guys, however I think he can limit those tonight against a struggling Red Sox offense. Boston is just struggling mightily and just can not seem to get things rolling at all, so I think Perez makes a great under-the-radar SP2 option tonight.
Mark Buehrle, Toronto Blue Jays (FD $7600, DK $6800) – This is a value option that I think can either pay off hugely or blow up badly as Buehrle gets to face the Mets tonight. I will start this off by saying Buehrle is far from a safe option tonight as I expect the Mets to run out a very right handed heavy lineup that could give him fits, however he has been pitching extremely well and this Blue Jays offense has been on a roll as they have won 11 straight and they should be able to provide some offense for him tonight. He has given up just 2 runs over his last 23 innings and is capable of firing a complete game shut out in under 100 pitches.
Jake Arrieta, Chicago Cubs (FD $9800, DK $9400) – You will normally see Arrieta in my studs category however tonight has me a little worried about the match-up as the Indians are very potent from the left side of the plate and could certainly cause some issues for Arrieta. Arrieta is not completely shutting teams down right now and has been victimized by the long ball a bit lately, which adds to my concern. However, he has high strikeout upside and very possibly could be the highest scoring pitcher of the night. Basically making him a perfect GPP play.
Taijuan Walker, Seattle Mariners (FD $7500, DK $7900) – Walker gets to face a struggling Giants offense tonight in San Francisco. He has been on a roll over his last 3 starts as he has gone 22 innings, has given up just 15 hits and 4 runs while striking out 21 while going 2 and 1. Walker is a young pitcher with a ton of upside, however does showcase a very very low floor as he has been lit up a few times so far in 2015.
Los Angeles Dodgers: Joc Pederson (FD $3800, DK $4400), Yasiel Puig (FD $4400, DK $5200), Adrian Gonzalez (FD $3400, DK $4900), Andre Ethier (FD $2900, DK $3700) – I love the looks of the Dodgers offense in Texas tonight against Gallardo. I think you can stack this lineup a few different ways as there should be some good offense tonight from this team.
Detroit Tigers: Ian Kinsler (FD $3400, DK $4400), Miguel Cabrera (FD $4800, DK $5600), Yoenis Cespedes (FD $3800, DK $4900), JD Martinez (FD $3000, DK $4500) – The weather is ugly however if this game is a go I think the Tigers get to Moscot early and often. I think Miggy is my top hitter of the day without considering weather as he just seems to be in one of those zones that could lead to a 7 homer type week.
Los Angeles Angels: Mike Trout (FD $5200, DK $5700), Albert Pujols (FD $4000, DK $4900), David Freese (FD $2900, DK $3600) – I think the Angels are in a great spot tonight against a lefty in Ross who has struggled in extended looks at the major league level and should come crashing down to earth after his last three solid starts. This trip could easily combine for 3+ home runs tonight.
Baltimore Orioles: Manny Machado (FD $3400, DK $4200), Adam Jones (FD $3600, DK $5200), Chris Davis (FD $3000, DK $4200) – I think the Orioles are my sneaky stack tonight against Aaron Harang as he has really started to come back to earth and may find navigating this O’s lineup to be very difficult tonight. Harang has given up 13 runs and 4 home runs over his last 2 starts.
My only real thought for tonight is wow does this weather suck. At first glance, there appears to be 8 games with some weather issues that could make rostering a lineup you are extremely confident in very tough. Tonight may be a night that you put together your best lineup and just hope that your players get their games in. If I were to look to stack one team that does not have any weather issues, that team would be the Angels. I know I listed Mark Buehrle earlier and I like him as a sleeper for GPPs, however I will be stacking the Mets offense against him in a lineup because they do have some potent right handed bats.
