Another split slate of MLB action as we have 7 games to go over for tonights late slate. We will take a look at the best pitchers and stacks to target in the MLB DFS Strategy.
Max Scherzer, Washington Nationals (FD $12,500, DK $14,500) – I shouldn’t have to sell you on Max Scherzer as he is pitching like the best pitcher in baseball right now and gets to face a depleted Atlanta Braves team who is running out a pitcher who is making his major league debut tonight. Scherzer and the Nationals are sitting at -204 and the game has an over/under of just 6.5 runs.
Scott Kazmir, Oakland Athletics (FD $9000, DK $9200) – Kazmir is sitting at a -151 favorite in a game with an over/under of just 7 runs tonight as he faces the Mariners in Oakland. The Mariners have pretty rough looking career numbers against Kazmir and I really like to target left handed pitching when they face the Mariners as they are very left hand heavy in their normal lineup.
Matt Boyd, Toronto Blue Jays (FD $5300, DK $4400) – Boyd is making his second start tonight and while he was not lights out in his first start, he did manage to strike out 7 in 6.2 innings. He did give up 3 home runs in that start, which is a bit concerning, however he managed 15.6 DK points which is pretty decent considering his very cheap salary. I think I like pairing Boyd with Scherzer for ultimate relief, but I could see a contrarian stack of the BoSox tonight as well.
Kevin Gausman, Baltimore Orioles (FD $6700, DK $6200) – Gausman and the Orioles are a -114 home favorite tonight going up against a very hot Yovani Gallardo. I keep waiting to see Gausman break out as a starting pitcher as he is considered one of the top starting pitcher prospects in baseball, however he struggles with inconsistency. This game does have an over/under of 8.5 so he is far from safe, however I think he gets the W and should be good for 5-6 strong innings.
Roenis Elias, Seattle Mariners (FD $7700, DK $7000) – Elias has alternated good and bad starts over his last 4 which would mean he is in line for a solid start tonight against the A’s. The A’s are a lot better against right handed pitching so Elias has that working for him this evening. Despite pitching in the same division, the A’s roster does not have many at bats against Elias and that usually benefits the pitcher in any match-up. This is going to be a tight game as the A’s are sending out Kazmir tonight.
Yovani Gallardo, Texas Rangers (FD $8000, DK $7700) – As I said earlier, Gallardo has been on a roll over the last month and a half and he gets to take on a very strong Orioles offense tonight. The ball has been flying in Camden Yards of late and Gallardo has had trouble with the long ball in his career which makes the Orioles a very interesting play tonight. Gallardo finds himself in the GPP section because of the Orioles offense. I could see this game going either way as we do not know what we are going to get from the O’s starter, Gausman.
Toronto Blue Jays: Josh Donaldson (FD $3900, DK $5200), Russell Martin (FD $3400, DK $3900), Jose Bautista (FD $4600, DK $5100), Edwin Encarnacion (FD $4000, DK $4400) – I shouldn’t have to say much as the Blue Jays get to take their hacks against yet another left handed pitcher tonight as the BoSox are running out Wade Miley this evening. Stack the Blue Jays every which way and do not be afraid to include Reyes, Colabello, Valencia, Pillar and even Travis.
Arizona Diamondbacks: A.J. Pollock (FD $3700, DK $4500), Paul Goldschmidt (FD $5400, DK $6000), Yasmany Tomas (FD $3300, DK $4200), David Peralta (FD $3800, DK $4100) – Rusin has given up 5 home runs over his last 3 road starts and now gets to take on a dangerous offense in a hitter’s park tonight. Pay attention to the lineup the D’Backs run out as they have been moving guys around trying to find the right combination and I would confidently use anybody they put out in the 1-6 spots tonight.
Colorado Rockies: Charlie Blackmon (FD $4300, DK $4600), Troy Tulowitzki (FD $3800, DK $5400), Nolan Arenado (FD $5100, DK $5700), Carlos Gonzalez (FD $3300, DK $4200) – Hellickson has a tendency to implode at times and especially against left handed hitters. I couldn’t list a Rockies stack without Tulo or Arenado so you get 2 lefties plus those studs in this stack tonight. I think Paulsen, Hundley and even LeMahieu make interesting options as well tonight.
St Louis Cardinals: Kolton Wong (FD $3200, DK $3700), Matt Carpenter (FD $3200, DK $3800), Jhonny Peralta (FD $3300, DK $3900), Jason Heyward (FD $3500, DK $3600) – The Cardinals are my kind of under the radar stack tonight as they get to face Tyson Ross who is generally looked at as a very strong pitcher. However, he walks a lot of batters and that is not a good thing against a very patient Cardinals lineup. I would include Grichuk and possibly Reynolds in any stack as this team is very cheap in comparison to the teams above.
There is some possible rain in Baltimore, Kansas City, St Louis and Atlanta tonight so make sure you are paying attention to the weather. I do think teams like the Royals, Nationals, Padres and Red Sox make off the radar interesting stack options for tonight. I may include Banuelos in a lineup or two as this guy was a top prospect at one time and when guys like that make their major league debuts, they tend to have some success and that intrigues. It would intrigue me more if he wasn’t facing Scherzer of course. If you want an ultimately contrarian pitcher for tonight, take Wade Miley and hope he continues the pitching he has been doing recently (4 runs allowed in last 3 starts).
