Welcome back MLB!! I can not tell you how difficult the last few days have been on me as I have been going thru wicked withdrawals. Looks like the sites are running some big welcome back contests and I definitely suggest taking advantage of all of the money out there across the three major sites.
Jose Fernandez, Miami Marlins (FD $10,500, DK $10,200) – Fernandez gets to take on the weakest offense in baseball and that is all you really need to know about him. He looks very strong in his return from tommy john and should be good for 7 innings and have a shot at double digit strikeouts tonight.
Sonny Gray, Oakland Athletics (FD $9900, DK $9600) – The match-up for Gray scares me a little bit as the Twins have been very potent lately and the A’s offense can disappear at times. I actually like Santana a little more in this match-up and I will talk more about him below. Gray certainly is one of the best pitchers in all of baseball and is capable of racking up a ton of fantasy points.
Lance Lynn, St Louis Cardinals (FD $9300, DK $9200) – If not for Fernandez, Lynn would be my top option of the night as he gets to take on the very weak New York Mets offense. The only thing that scares me is the fact that the Mets are running out Noah Syndergaard. I think Lynn is in a great spot tonight and the Mets bullpen is pretty so-so, which means the Cardinals should be able to get to them should they struggle with Syndergaard.
Mike Montgomery, Seattle Mariners (FD $7800, DK $6400) – Montgomery has been extremely solid since making his MLB debut, but is coming off of his worst start but gets to face a Yankee team that he held to 1 run over 6 innings this season. It is a tough match-up as the Yankees will be sending out Tanaka, however I think Montgomery makes a great option to pair with Fernandez on two pitcher sites.
Ervin Santana, Minnesota Twins (FD $7300, DK $7000) – Santana is one of my favorite options tonight and I guess its more of a gut call than anything as the Twins have been hot and the A’s are just not playing like everybody expected them to this year. Sonny Gray will make it very difficult for Santana to pull out the Win tonight, however I think Santana can shut down this A’s offense, rack up the strikeouts and eek out a victory.
Kyle Hendricks, Chicago Cubs (FD $7300, DK $7600) – Hendricks is really tough to trust, however he gets a great spot tonight against the Braves. Teheran is taking the hill for the Braves and he has been really solid at home so far this season and that is why Hendricks falls into the GPP section (Teheran could be here as well). I think he is an under the radar play tonight that could certainly approach a mid 20’s score on DK.
Masahiro Tanaka, New York Yankees (FD $9700, DK $9500) – Tanaka travels to Seattle and has what will probably be an intriguing match-up tonight. I just worry about his up and down nature with his elbow and that is why you find him here in the GPP section. The Mariners lineup had shown some signs of life leading up to the all-star break and they should come out motivated and be looking to make a run.
Kansas City Royals: Alcides Escobar (FD $2500, DK $4200), Mike Moustakas (FD $2300, DK $3800), Lorenzo Cain (FD $4000, DK $5000), Kendrys Morales (FD $2800, DK $4000) – The Royals get to take their hacks against John Danks tonight and I will ALWAYS target bats against him, even if he continues to shock lately and not get blown up. I like Morales over Hosmer as Morales has been driving in runs at a greater rate this season, however would not fault you for trying to go the other way. Salvador Perez should be added to the stack on DK as well.
Houston Astros: Jose Altuve (FD $4300, DK $4400), Carlos Correa (FD $3600, DK $4100), Evan Gattis (FD $3300, DK $3700), Chris Carter (FD $3000, DK $3700) – I love the Astros tonight as they get to face a lefty that is making his return after a very lengthy DL stay. Pay attention to the Astros lineup and do not be afraid to stack anybody in the top 6 hitters tonight.
Pittsburgh Pirates: Neil Walker (FD $3200, DK $4300), Andrew McCutchen (FD $4900, DK $5300), Starling Marte (FD $3700, DK $4700), Pedro Alvarez (FD $2600, DK $3800) – I love the Pirates career numbers against Fiers tonight and think they will be somewhat under owned. McCutchen has dominated him in his career and should be able to feed off his All Star game bomb. I could certainly see adding in Polanco should he be hitting in the lead off spot tonight.
Cleveland Indians: Jason Kipnis (FD $4000, DK $4200), Michael Brantley (FD $3200, DK $4100), Brandon Moss (FD $2900, DK $3700) – This is one that I think will be a sneaky stack as the Indians take on Mike Leake tonight. I really like all of the left handed hitters tonight for the Indians and think you can get creative with your stacks. I certainly can see using Lindor, Santana and Murphy.
I really like both sides of the Giants-D’Backs match-up and think both offenses make great stack options but I also think either pitcher could be really sneaky as well. The Rays lineup has really solid career numbers against Hutchison which could make them extremely sneaky or an awesome mini stack to fill in with your other stacks. I think you can make a case for Charlie Morton, Colin McHugh, James Shields and Jordan Zimmermann as solid GPP options for tonight. Definitely pay attention to the weather as there seems to be some issues around the midwest.
