The New York Giants defensive backfield will have a fresh look in 2015 with the return of Steve Spagnolo as defensive coordinator. The cornerbacks will be playing a lot of press man to man coverage which should be playing into the strengths of both Prince Amukamara and Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie. DRC had a dominating year in 2014 and should look even better in this new bump and run scheme. Prince is in a contract year and as long as he stays healthy and performs like he does when he can play then he should have no issues locking up a long term contract. Both the cornerback positions look to be solid to start the season.
The Giants let Antrel Rolle walk in Free agency this offseason. They went into camp with draft pick Mykkele Thompson and veteran Jeromy Miles competing for the Free safety spot. But after Mykkele Thompson went down for the season with injury the coaching staff must have felt shallow at the safety position as they went out and signed Brandon Meriweather shortly after training camp got under way. Meriweather is a decent safety against the run but got absolutely thrashed last year in coverage. He will still be the week 1 starter so as strong as the cornerbacks are looking for the New York Giants, questions still abound at the free safety position. The New York Giants selected Landon Collins with the first pick in the 2nd round of this NFL Draft. He is expected to start at the strong safety position but has been dealing with an MLC sprain for the past week. It is possible he is ready for week 1 but it is still unsure at this time if he will start after not getting any preseason action. His strength also lies in playing the run so this defensive backfield could easily be picked on early up the middle.
The New York Giants backfield is definitely one to monitor closely for the first few weeks of the NFL season. The NFC East is wide open and they will have some tough matchups early on starting with the Cowboys and Dez Bryant in week 1 and drawing the Falcons and Julio in Week 2. It will be tough to fade those receivers based on matchup but how they perform these first two weeks will go a long way in seeing if they are backfield to target in 2015 or not. Well most daily gamers will be on Dez and Julio in these matchups I may also take a closer look at the tight end position and slot receivers. They will have the easiest matchups in pass coverage against this defensive backfield.
