Clayton Kershaw, Los Angeles Dodgers (FD $13,000, DK $14,400) – Kershaw gets to take on the strike out happy Chicago Cubs tonight and he is a large favorite as it sits at -220 as of right now. The game has an over/under of just 6.5 runs, which is to be expected when Kershaw takes the mound. The Dodgers offense has been pretty lackluster lately and that might be the only thing that hinders Kershaw’s performance. Kershaw struck out 9 in 7 innings against the Cubs earlier this season and he is pitching better than anybody in baseball right now. He is pricey for a reason and with all of the options today, he is going to be under owned.
Max Scherzer, Washington Nationals (FD $11,500, DK $12,500) – Scherzer and the Nationals are a -260 home favorite tonight as they take on the Miami Marlins. The Marlins as a team have hit Scherzer decently in their careers, so this may not be as easy of a start as Vegas is making it seem. With that said, Scherzer has really struggled in August as he is sporting an ERA of 6.86 in 21 innings. He has faced the Marlins twice this season and is 2-0 with an ERA of 3.21 and he has 16 K’s over 14 innings pitched in those starts. At some point Scherzer is going to figure it out and tonight could very well be that night.
Matt Harvey, New York Mets (FD $11,000, DK $11,300) – Harvey and the Mets are sitting at a -205 favorite tonight as they get to face the Red Sox. The Red Sox have been playing pretty well lately, however they should be no match tonight for the Mets as the Mets are on fire. Harvey had his last start skipped to help keep him fresh down the stretch and I think that comes in handy tonight. Harvey has an August ERA of 0.43 in 21 innings so far. I am going to predict a double digit K game for Harvey tonight to go along with 7 innings of 3 hit baseball.
R.A. Dickey, Toronto Blue Jays (FD $7600, DK $5800) – Dickey finds himself here because of the fact that he is a big time favorite tonight. Dickey and the Jays are sitting at a -210 favorite as they take on the Tigers. The game does have an over/under of 9.5 runs. The Tigers lineup can be very dangerous and this does have a lot of GPP feel, however for his price, it is very tough to find somebody who is such a gigantic favorite.
Raisel Iglesias, Cincinnati Reds (FD $8000, DK $7800) – Iglesias and the Reds are a slight underdog as they travel to Milwaukee for tonight’s game that has an over/under of 7.5. Iglesias has been dominant in August so far as he has an ERA of 1.93 to go with 35 strikeouts in just 32.2 innings. Iglesias has dominated right handed hitters all season long as they are hitting just .159 against him on the season. Lefties have hit him for a .309 average, however the Brewers tend to be very right hand heavy and most of the lefties they sprinkle in are not ones that should scare you. For the money, I think Iglesias makes a top option tonight.
Francisco Liriano, Pittsburgh Pirates (FD $9500, DK $10,000) – Liriano has struggled so far in August and that is what drops him to the GPP spot as he has a very favorable match-up going up against the Rockies at home. Liriano and the Pirates are sitting at -250 in a game with an over/under of just 7 runs. The Rockies struggle greatly against left handed pitching and Liriano could put up a monster stat line, but of course he is always a threat to walk 4 or 5 and be done after 5.
Masahiro Tanaka, New York Yankees (FD $9200, DK $10,200) – Tanaka and the Yankees are a -220 road favorite tonight as they head to Atlanta. It’s been a long time since I have seen a road team as such a gigantic favorite and it not be a man named Kershaw. Tanaka should be in a solid spot as he is a strikeout pitcher heading to the NL and gets to face the P spot a few times in the game. Tanaka has actually pitched quite a bit better on the road this season as he has a road ERA of 2.85 and a .218 average against to go along with just 4 home runs allowed as compared to 15 at home.
Toronto Blue Jays: Troy Tulowitzki (FD $3800, DK $4300), Josh Donaldson (FD $6000, DK $5700), Jose Bautista (FD $5300, DK $5300), Edwin Encarnacion (FD $5300, DK $5300) – The Jays get to face a lefty that has struggled greatly and they get to do so in Toronto tonight. That usually is a recipe for success. Boyd was traded to the Tigers in the Price deal and has made 2 starts in the Rogers Centre so far in his young career and hitters are hitting .441 against him and have hit 5 home runs in just 6.2 innings. I think the top 6 in this lineup will make perfect stacking options.
New York Mets: Juan Lagares (FD $2600, DK $2900), Yoenis Cespedes (FD $4400, DK $4900), David Wright (FD $3600, DK $4000), Wilmer Flores (FD $3200, DK $3600) – The Mets offense has been the most dangerous in baseball over the last week and tonight they get to take on a rookie left handed pitcher in NY. I think a case can be made for anybody in this lineup tonight as they should be pretty right hand heavy and even somebody like Granderson could be a sneaky inclusion.
Seattle Mariners: Ketel Marte (FD $3400, DK $4000), Nelson Cruz (FD $5000, DK $5600), Robinson Cano (FD $3800, DK $4400), Franklin Gutierrez (FD $3300, DK $3800) – Danks has been pitching pretty well at home, however I just do not buy it and I love to use the Mariners as a sneaky option against left handed pitching. Marte has been playing really well and we all know what Cruz can do to baseballs. Gutierrez might be my favorite platoon specialist in all of DFS Baseball. Trumbo, Montero and even Seager make solid additions to the stack.
New York Yankees: Jacoby Ellsbury (FD $3300, DK $4500), Brett Gardner (FD $3000, DK $4600), Carlos Beltran (FD $3400, DK $4000), Brian McCann (FD $3400, DK $4000) – I think the Yankees will be a sneaky option tonight as they head to Atlanta, which means the loss of ARod and the DH spot. Make sure to pay attention to the lineup to make sure Ellsbury is in the lineup as he missed the last game. I think guys like Drew, Headley and Bird are sneaky additions to an already sneaky stack. I really love McCann making a return to Atlanta in this one.
My other thoughts for tonight is just going to center around the fact that there are a ton of pitching options to go along with 6 games in which a team is a -205 favorite or larger. That right there gives us 6 pitchers that need to be heavily considered for your Cash and GPP teams. I haven’t gotten the chance to mention guys like Gray, Wacha, Kazmir, Kennedy, Hamels, Walker, Hammel, Jungmann, Heaney, are you sensing a theme here? So many GPP options at the P spot tonight is going to make an interesting night as far as ownership goes and also going to make it even more important to hit on the right P combination on multi pitcher sites. Due to all the options tonight, any time somebody racks up a few K’s in an inning or if a pitcher throws a gem, somebody is going to shoot up the leader boards passed you. If I had to predict the pitching combo that wins the big GPPs tonight on DK, I would have lean towards a Kershaw/Iglesias pairing even with Kershaw being so expensive.
(Cruz, Gutierrez, Baustista and Flores are my others)
